THEN
Like many others in the hospitality sector, Movenpick Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, had an ever-increasing problem: the unstoppable rise of energy costs.
NOW
Movenpick Hotel has achieved substantial savings: in energy consumption, in finances, and in environmental impact.
HOW
It began with an audit from Ivan Seka, EnCO Consultant and Operations Director at Best Energy Kenya.
STEP
MONITORING
THE PROBLEM:
YOU CAN’T SAVE WHAT YOU CAN’T SEE
The role of Best Energy Kenya was to closely monitor energy consumption throughout the site, with a particular emphasis on areas such as kitchens and heating systems.
HINDSIGHT ISN’T 20/20 - INSIGHT IS
The results of this project came from the practical application of energy-saving measures, but that was only possible thanks to the comprehensive monitoring of energy usage within the hotel. You can’t save what you can’t see.
One notable revelation was identifying mini-fridges in unoccupied rooms. These were consistently consuming energy across 270 rooms! Once the Movenpick team were aware of this, behavioural change could be implemented. It was as simple as collaborating with the housekeeping team to ensure that mini-fridges not in use were promptly switched off.
STEP
MANGEMENT
Once wastage areas were identified, the team could begin adopting energy-efficient practices and equipment.
Best Energy Kenya led the implementation of energy conservation measures (ECMs) in critical areas including the kitchens, laundry facilities, conference rooms, and guest accommodations – all guided by meticulous data insights.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Equipment shutdown protocols (manual and automated). Eniscope alerts for unusual usage patterns.
Staff training on energy conservation.
Accountability culture and assignment of Energy Champions.
Periodic energy audits.
Equipment maintenance to identify faults or leaks .
STEP
EDUCATION
WHEN IT COMES TO ENERGY EFFICIENCY, IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT TECH.
It’s about people, too. This meant that awareness and education – for both hotel staff and guests – was crucial.
Best Energy Kenya established Energy Champions in different departments of the hotel to empower stakeholders. Over 160 staff members undertook energy management training. Robust Measurement and Verification (M&V) practices would then be used to quantify the ongoing changes, creating a culture of accountability.
THE IMPACT
Movenpick Hotel is an example of energy efficiency done right. The collaboration between the hotel and Best Energy Kenya – using the EnCO methodology – has yielded remarkable results. It showcases the immediate impact of energy management.
Annual financial savings of:
$75,000
The initiative has delivered substantial financial savings – a testament to the effectiveness of energy conservation measures and behaviour change strategies.
A monthly energy saving rate of:
24.96%
This ongoing improvement in energy efficiency reflects the commitment and dedication of the hotel’s staff and the effectiveness of the EnMS.
Metric tons of Co2 saved:
47,090
The initiative has contributed to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions, mitigating the hotel’s carbon footprint, in addition to financial savings.
THE LAST WORD
This project demonstrated not only the power of data-driven decision-making but the benefits of energy efficiency. Movenpick Hotel isn’t only saving financially, but has cut its carbon footprint.
The impact of energy efficiency isn’t limited to one hotel, one place, one business – its power expands to the rest of the planet.
